Pile drilling air for a solar farm in northwest China

Background

Northwest China has abundant sunshine, and large solar farms are being built across gravel plains and hills. One farm can need tens of thousands of mounting piles — many scattered holes, usually no grid power, and wind, sand and day-night temperature swings that test the equipment.

Challenge

Solar mounting piles need many shallow holes in gravel plains or hills, typically 2–6 m deep, with frequent moves. There is no grid on site, wind and sand are heavy and temperature swings are large; blocked filters and constant moves are the main challenges.

Solution

An LG Series two-stage diesel unit delivering 22 m³/min at 19 bar to match the pile rigs, fitted with the desert filter kit; heavy-duty chassis, hard-wearing tyres and drawbar for frequent moves over gravel; grouped wear parts so filters can be changed on site.

Results

The unit followed the rig hole to hole and breathed normally in sandstorms; it supplied air for large numbers of pile holes and kept drilling on schedule.
